Meet Ascalon: A Super Old City!
Ascalon, also called Ashkelon, is a very, very old city by the sea. It's been around since way before your grandparents were born, even before castles were built! People started living there over 5,000 years ago.
It was a busy port, which means ships came and went all the time, bringing cool things and people from far away. The city has seen so many changes, like building strong walls and even being part of different empires.
Who Lived There and When?
Long, long ago, Ascalon was a big deal. It was a place where people called the Philistines lived. Later, it became a super important city for the Egyptians.
Then, it was a busy place during the time of the Romans and Greeks. Later still, knights called Crusaders fought there! It was like a crossroads where many different groups of people met and sometimes fought.
It’s amazing to think about all the stories those old stones could tell!
Why Ascalon is So Cool!
Ascalon is famous because it was a really important city for a very long time. It was a big port, which helped people trade and travel. It was also a strong city with big walls that protected it.
Because it was so important, many different armies wanted to control it. This means lots of history happened right there, from ancient times all the way up to the Middle Ages when knights were around. It's like a real-life history book!
Battles and Big Changes!
Ascalon was a place where big battles happened, especially during the time of the Crusaders. Imagine knights in shining armor! One famous battle happened in 1099, and another big fight, a siege, was in 1153.
Later, a leader named Baybars decided the city walls were too dangerous for enemies to use, so he had them knocked down. Even though the city changed a lot, its story is still exciting and important for understanding the past.
