Key Facts
Where is Essex?
Imagine a big, friendly place in the east of England called Essex! It's like a giant puzzle piece next to other places like Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. To the east, it tickles the big, blue North Sea.
On the other sides, it snuggles up to Greater London and Hertfordshire. The biggest town here is Southend-on-Sea, which has a very long pier, and the special county town is Chelmsford. It's a place full of green fields and a coastline that stretches for miles and miles, longer than 900 football fields put together!
A Land of Old Stories!
Essex has been around for a super long time! Long, long ago, people called the Trinovantes lived here and built a town called Colchester, which is the oldest town in all of Britain. Later, brave Romans came, but then the Trinovantes got them back!
Then, people called Saxons arrived and even started their own kingdom called Essex. Vikings also visited and even got money from a king here! It's a place where history is like a treasure chest, full of amazing stories.
Nature's Playground!
Essex is a pretty flat place, especially by the sea, which has lots of wiggly bits called estuaries. Think of them like giant fingers reaching into the land! There are special forests like Epping Forest, which is full of ancient trees that have seen so many seasons.
Parts of the coast are like muddy, watery fields called salt marshes, perfect for birds to visit. And guess what? The coastline is so long, it's one of the longest of any county in England!
What Do People Do?
Lots of people live in Essex, especially in the south, which is quite busy. The biggest towns are Southend-on-Sea, Colchester, Basildon, and Chelmsford. Many people work in jobs that help the towns and cities nearby, like London.
Because it's near the sea, some people work with boats and ports. It's a place where old history meets new towns, and people live and work by the sea and in the countryside.
