Ellesmere Island

Key Facts
Welcome to the Land of Muskoxen!
Ellesmere Island is a super-duper big island in Canada, way, way up north! It's the third biggest island in all of Canada, which is like having three giant playgrounds right next to each other. It's so far north that it's almost at the very tippy-top of the world.
This island is so special that it's called 'Umingmak Nuna' in a special language, which means 'land of muskoxen.' Muskoxen are like fuzzy, giant cows with long horns that live there!
Mountains, Ice, and Very Few People!
This island isn't flat like a pancake; it has huge mountains that are part of a special mountain range called the Arctic Cordillera. Some parts of the island are protected in a giant park called Quttinirpaaq National Park, which means 'High Arctic' in a language called Inuktitut. Even though the island is enormous, only a tiny number of people live there, about 144, which is less than the number of kids in a big school!
They live in three small towns.
Canada's Northernmost Point!
Guess what? Ellesmere Island has the most northern piece of land in all of Canada! It's called Cape Columbia. If you stood there, you'd be closer to the North Pole than almost anywhere else in Canada. It's so far north that it's super cold most of the time, and there's lots of ice and snow. It’s a wild and chilly place, perfect for animals that love the cold!
A Special Place in the Arctic
Ellesmere Island is part of a group of islands called the Arctic Archipelago. It's a very important place for scientists who study the Arctic. Because it's so far north and has these amazing mountains and parks, it helps us learn about our planet. It's a wild, beautiful, and very cold place that makes Canada a truly amazing country!
