North Pole
Key Facts
Where is the Super-Top?
The North Pole is like the tippy-top of our planet Earth! It's the very farthest point north you can go. Instead of land, it's mostly covered in ice that floats on the ocean. It's so far north that the closest land is a tiny island far, far away, and the closest people live even farther! It's a super special spot where all the imaginary lines that show longitude meet up.
Ice, Ice Baby!
The North Pole is a giant, chilly ice party! It sits on top of the Arctic Ocean, and the water is covered in sea ice that's always moving and changing, like a giant frozen puzzle. Sometimes the ice is super thick, but it can also break apart. Because it's on the ocean, it's tricky to build anything permanent there, unlike the South Pole which is on land. It's a very wild and frozen place!
Adventures to the Top!
People have dreamed of reaching the North Pole for a long, long time! In the past, brave explorers tried to get there by boat or even on foot. One of the first times people officially flew over the North Pole was in an airship in 1926. Later, amazing teams used snowmobiles and even planes to make it all the way there. It takes a lot of courage and planning to visit this icy frontier!
A Place of Many Directions
At the North Pole, something super weird happens: no matter which way you turn, you're always facing south! All the lines on a globe that go up and down meet right there. Because of this, there isn't a set time zone, so people can use whatever time they want! It's a place that's truly unique and at the very center of the Northern Hemisphere.
