Eastern Wolf

Imagine a super-smart dog that lives in the wild! That's kind of like an Eastern wolf. They have grayish-brown fur with hints of cinnamon, making them look like they're wearing a cozy, patchy coat.

Their tails and backs can be a mix of black and gray, while their bellies and chests are lighter. They are a bit smaller than a big gray wolf but bigger than a coyote, like a medium-sized dog you might see at a park, but much wilder! They are super important for keeping the forest healthy.

Eastern wolves call the beautiful forests of eastern Canada and the Great Lakes region of the United States their home. Think of big, green woods with lots of trees, lakes, and rivers. There are two main groups: one lives in places like Minnesota and northern Ontario, and another, called the Algonquin wolf, lives further east in places like Quebec and central Ontario.

They like to stay hidden in these wild places, away from busy towns and cities.

These wolves are super hunters! Their favorite meal is the white-tailed deer, which is like a speedy, leafy-green snack for them. But sometimes, they might also try to catch a big, clumsy moose or a busy beaver building its dam.

They are carnivores, which means they only eat meat. They use their amazing senses of smell and hearing to find their food and work together to catch it, just like a team playing a game!

Scientists are still trying to figure out exactly what an Eastern wolf is! Some think they are a special kind of gray wolf, while others believe they are a mix of gray wolf and coyote. It's like they have a secret family tree that's a little bit confusing!
