Key Facts
Where is This Frozen Place?
East Antarctica is a super-duper big part of the continent of Antarctica. It's mostly in the Eastern part of the world, like where the sun rises! It's separated from another part of Antarctica by giant mountains called the Transantarctic Mountains. Most of East Antarctica is covered in a thick blanket of ice, sometimes as thick as a giant skyscraper is tall!
What's it Like There?
It's very, very cold and dry in East Antarctica, and it's covered in ice all the time, except for tiny bits near the ocean. There aren't many plants or animals living on the land itself, but the coasts are busy places! Lots of penguins and seabirds come here to have babies. Seals also love to hang out on the ice floating in the water.
Amazing Animals of the Ice!
Even though it's so cold, some amazing animals call the icy waters and coasts of East Antarctica home. You can find penguins waddling around and seabirds soaring in the sky. Down in the water and on the ice, you might see different kinds of seals, like the sleek leopard seal or the big elephant seal. They love to swim and hunt for fish!
The South Pole's Secret!
Guess what? The very tippy-top of the world, the Geographic South Pole, is right in East Antarctica! It's like the center of a giant frozen pizza. Because it's so far from the ocean, it's even colder here than in other parts of Antarctica. It's a place of extreme cold and incredible beauty.
