The Transantarctic Mountains

The Transantarctic Mountains are like a super-long, super-tall wall of rock and ice that stretches all the way across Antarctica. They are so big, they actually divide the continent into two parts: East Antarctica and West Antarctica. Think of them as a giant divider, like a huge fence made of mountains!

These mountains are mostly covered in snow and ice, making them a very cold and wild place. They are made of old rocks that were pushed up a long, long time ago. Even though they are covered in white, they are actually made of the same kinds of rocks you might find in other mountains around the world.

Long ago, brave explorers sailed to Antarctica. In 1841, a explorer named James Clark Ross was the first to see these amazing mountains from his ship. Later, other explorers actually walked across them! It took a long time and was very difficult because of all the ice and snow.

These mountains are super important because they help scientists understand Antarctica. They are like a giant map that shows us how the continent is put together. Studying them helps us learn about the Earth's past and how it might change in the future.
