Meet the Gentle Giant!

Diplodocus was a super-duper long dinosaur that lived a very, very long time ago, during the Jurassic period. It was a plant-eater, which means it munched on leaves and twigs all day long. Its name means 'double beam' because of the special bones in its tail. It was so big, it would have made a great slide at the playground!

Where Did They Roam?

These amazing dinosaurs stomped around in what is now North America, in places like Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. They lived in forests and open woodlands, where there were plenty of yummy plants to eat. Imagine a whole herd of them walking through a giant forest, their long necks reaching for the tastiest leaves!

A Tail Like a Whip!

Diplodocus had a tail that was incredibly long, even longer than its body! Scientists think they might have used their tails like a giant whip to scare away predators or maybe even to communicate with each other. It was so long, it could have reached the top of a two-story house!

What Did They Munch?

Diplodocus was a herbivore, meaning it only ate plants. It used its long neck to reach leaves high up in the trees, like a living crane. They probably ate ferns, cycads, and other ancient plants. They didn't have sharp teeth for chewing, so they likely swallowed stones to help grind up their food in their tummies.
