Key Facts
Meet the Giant!
Denali is the super-duper tallest mountain in all of North America! It stands proudly in Alaska, a huge state way up north. Think of it like the king of all mountains in this part of the world.
It’s so big that its peak is often hidden by fluffy white clouds, like a secret whispered to the sky. This giant mountain is the star of a special place called Denali National Park and Preserve, where amazing animals roam free.
How Tall is This Giant?
Denali is incredibly tall, reaching a whopping 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) into the sky! That's like stacking over 100 school buses on top of each other! If you could stand at the very bottom and look all the way up, it would be an amazing sight. It’s even taller from its base on the land to its pointy top than Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain from sea level to summit. Wow!
Who Named This Big Mountain?
For a very, very long time, the people who have lived near Denali, called the Koyukon people, have called it 'Denali,' which means 'the great one' or 'the tall one.' It’s a perfect name for such a massive mountain! Later, some explorers came and called it 'Mount McKinley,' but now, most people call it Denali again because that’s its ancient and special name.
Adventures on the Mountain!
Climbing Denali is a super tough adventure! The first time someone officially made it to the very top was in 1913. Imagine climbing for days and days, facing cold winds and slippery ice! Today, there’s a special path called the West Buttress route that many climbers use because it’s a bit easier and safer. It’s a place for brave explorers and amazing nature!
