Key Facts
The Super Chill Capybara!
Imagine a giant guinea pig that loves to swim! That's a capybara! They are the biggest rodents on Earth, and they are super friendly.
Capybaras live in big groups, like a giant family party. They love to hang out near water, like rivers and lakes, where they can splash and cool off. They are also very social and often let other animals, like birds, sit on their backs!
It's like they have their own built-in seats for their feathered friends.
What's for Lunch?
Capybaras are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. Their favorite snacks are grasses and water plants. They munch on these all day long! They have special teeth that keep growing, so they can chew tough plants without wearing their teeth down. When they eat, they often sit up on their hind legs, looking around to make sure no sneaky predators are nearby. They are very careful eaters!
Big and Brave (Mostly!)
Capybaras are HUGE for rodents! They can be as long as a small car and weigh as much as a grown-up person. Even though they are big, they are gentle. Their main defense is to run into the water and swim away, or hide underwater with just their eyes and nose sticking out. They can hold their breath for a long time, like super swimmers! They are also very good at listening and smelling for danger.
Capybara Pals Forever!
Capybaras are super social and live in groups of 10 to 20, but sometimes even more! They communicate with each other using clicks, whistles, and barks. When they are babies, called pups, they stay close to their mom. They are born with fur and can see and walk soon after they are born. Itβs like they are ready for adventure right away! They are truly amazing animals that love to be together.
