Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Atlas!
The Atlas Mountains are like a super long, bumpy backbone for North Africa! They stretch for about 2,500 kilometers, which is like driving from New York City all the way to Denver, Colorado! These mountains are so big they go through three countries: Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia.
They are like a giant wall, separating the hot, sandy Sahara Desert from the cool, blue Mediterranean Sea and the big Atlantic Ocean.
How Tall Are They, Really?
The tallest peak in the Atlas Mountains is called Toubkal. It's super, super high, reaching 4,167 meters (that's 13,671 feet!). To help you imagine, that's taller than four Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other!
It's a very challenging climb to the top, and only experienced climbers with special gear can make it. The weather up high can be cold, but in the summer, it's sunny and around 25°C (77°F).
Home to Amazing Animals!
These mountains are like a special home for lots of cool plants and animals. Some of them you can find in other parts of Africa, but some are also found in Europe! It's like a meeting place for nature.
Sadly, some of these amazing creatures are in danger, and a few have already disappeared forever. This is why it's important to protect places like the Atlas Mountains and the animals that live there.
Stories of the Mountains
Long, long ago, people believed a giant named Atlas held up the sky. The name 'Atlas' might even come from words that mean 'mountain' in some old languages spoken by people who live there! These mountains have been home to people for a very long time, especially the Berber people, who have their own special traditions and ways of life. They know these mountains like the back of their hand!
