Key Facts
Meet the Mountain Makers!
Long, long ago, the Earth's crust was like a giant jigsaw puzzle with huge pieces. These pieces, called tectonic plates, started to move! When two of these giant plates bumped into each other, they didn't just stop.
They pushed and squeezed the land between them, making it wrinkle up like a rug. This wrinkling and pushing is what created the amazing, super-tall mountains we call the Alps and many others around the world. It's like Earth giving itself a big, bumpy hug!
When Earth Got Wrinkly
This mountain-building party didn't happen all at once. It started a super long time ago, even before the dinosaurs were gone, and it kept going for millions of years! Think of it like a very, very slow-motion car crash.
The plates kept pushing, and the mountains kept growing taller and taller. Some of these mountains are so tall, they are way higher than the tallest giraffe you can imagine, reaching up into the clouds!
WOW! Mountains That Reach the Sky!
The mountains made by this process are called the Alpide belt. It's a huge chain of mountains that goes all the way around the world, like a giant necklace! You can find these super-tall mountains in places like Europe, Asia, and even across to North America.
They are so big and impressive, they change the weather and create special homes for animals that can live high up where it's cold and windy.
Why These Mountains Are Awesome
These mountains aren't just pretty to look at. They are super important! They hold lots of fresh water in their snowy tops, which flows down to rivers that people and animals need.
They also give us beautiful places to explore and play. The rocks and minerals found in these mountains are also very useful for building things. So, these giant, bumpy mountains are like Earth's way of giving us amazing gifts!
