Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary

Key Facts
Welcome to The Rock!
Alcatraz was a super-duper secure prison on an island far away from the city. It was so tricky to get to because it's 1.25 miles away from San Francisco, across cold, wavy water. People called it 'The Rock' because it was so strong and hard to escape from. It was like a fortress built to keep everyone inside!
From Fort to Famous Prison
Long, long ago, before it was a prison, Alcatraz was a fort to protect the land. Then, it became a military prison. But in 1934, it was made into the most secure prison for the country's most dangerous criminals. They made it extra safe with strong walls and lots of guards, thinking no one could ever break out!
Tiny Cells, Big Rules!
Inside Alcatraz, the prison cells were very small, about the size of a small bedroom, just 9 feet by 5 feet. They had a bed, a tiny desk, and a sink. There wasn't much room for anything else! Some prisoners who were really naughty were sent to a special, dark place called 'The Hole' for punishment.
An Island of Secrets
Even though the prison closed in 1963, Alcatraz is still a famous place! Lots of people visit it every year to learn about its secrets. It's now a museum and a special park where you can explore the old buildings and imagine what it was like to be there a long, long time ago.
