Key Facts
Where is This Mysterious Island?
Alcatraz Island is a tiny island floating in the big San Francisco Bay, near a place called the Golden Gate Strait. It's so close to the city of San Francisco, you can almost wave to it! But don't try to swim there, the water is super cold and the currents are strong, like a giant washing machine trying to pull you away!
From Lighthouse to Lock-Up!
Long ago, Alcatraz wasn't a prison at all. First, they built a lighthouse to help ships see where they were going. Then, it became a fort to protect the land. But the most famous part started in 1934 when it turned into a super-secure federal prison, known as 'The Rock'!
The Prison That Couldn't Be Escaped!
Alcatraz was famous because it was almost impossible to escape. The freezing cold water and powerful waves made it a very dangerous swim. Even though many tried, most people couldn't make it to shore. It was like a real-life puzzle with no easy answers for the prisoners!
A New Life for The Rock!
After the prison closed in 1963, Alcatraz didn't stay empty. Native Americans lived there for a while to share their story. Now, it's a national park! Lots of people visit every year to see the old prison, the lighthouse, and all the seabirds that call it home.
