Key Facts
Meet the Giant Island!
Imagine an island that’s super long, like driving for almost 5 hours without stopping! That’s Vancouver Island! It’s in the big blue Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Canada.
It’s so big that it’s the largest island on the west coast of North and South America. It has tall mountains, green forests, and beautiful beaches. Some parts are even warm enough to grow yummy lemons and olives, which is pretty amazing for Canada!
Long, Long Ago on the Island
People have lived on Vancouver Island for thousands of years, way before cars or even boats with sails! Indigenous peoples were the first to call this island home. Later, explorers from Spain and Britain came.
They met and talked, and decided to name the island after two of them, George Vancouver and Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra. It’s like they shook hands and said, 'Let’s name this place after us!'
Island Life and Fun Cities
Lots of people live on Vancouver Island, and nearly half of them live in a big city called Victoria. Victoria is the capital of British Columbia, which is like the main office for the whole area. You can also find other fun cities like Nanaimo, where people love to visit. The island is full of amazing nature, from giant trees to playful sea creatures.
Island Superpowers!
Vancouver Island has some cool superpowers! It has one of the warmest climates in Canada, which is why you can find things like olives growing there. It’s also the 43rd biggest island in the whole world! That’s a lot of land to explore, with forests, mountains, and a long coastline where the ocean meets the land. It’s a truly special place.
