A Secret Mission on the High Seas!

Imagine getting a super secret mission! That's what happened to Captain James Cook. His last big trip started in 1776.

He was supposed to take a young man named Omai back home. But the real secret was to find a shortcut, a passage, between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It was like trying to find a hidden door between two giant rooms!

He sailed on two ships, HMS Resolution and HMS Discovery, with lots of brave sailors.

Discovering New Islands and a Big Surprise!

After dropping Omai off, Cook sailed to places no one from Europe had seen before! He found the Hawaiian Islands, which were like a beautiful surprise party in the middle of the ocean. He also sailed along the coast of North America, drawing maps of the land. It was like being the first person to explore a giant, new playground. But the ocean was tricky, and sometimes ice blocked their way.

A Sad Ending in Paradise

Cook and his crew decided to go back to the warm Hawaiian Islands for the winter. But things didn't go as planned. There were arguments between the sailors and the people who lived there. Sadly, Captain Cook was in a big fight and was hurt very badly. He passed away in 1779. It was a very sad end to his incredible adventures.

Did They Find the Secret Passage?

Even though Cook didn't make it, his friends kept trying to find the secret sea passage. They sailed into icy waters where big chunks of ice, called pack ice, blocked their path. They couldn't find the shortcut. The ships finally sailed all the way back home to London in 1780, after many years at sea. They didn't find the passage, but they learned so much about the world!
