Hawaiian Islands

The Hawaiian Islands are a chain of eight big islands and many smaller ones in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Imagine a long line of islands stretching for 1,500 miles! These islands are not just land; they are the very tops of huge underwater mountains.

They were made by volcanoes a long, long time ago. Because they are so far from any continent, they are like a secret paradise hidden in the middle of the big, wide sea.

Long ago, people from Europe called these the Sandwich Islands. Today, we call them Hawaii, which is the name of the biggest island in the group. The islands sit on something called the Pacific Plate, which is like a giant puzzle piece of the Earth that is always moving very slowly.

It is amazing to think that these islands were built by hot, bubbling lava rising up from deep inside the Earth to create the beautiful land we see today.

Hawaii is a very special place because it is the only U.S. state that is made up entirely of islands. It is not connected to the rest of the United States by land at all! People who live there get to enjoy a unique island life.

The Northwestern islands are very special too. They are protected as a national monument, which means they are kept safe and clean so that nature can thrive without being disturbed by too many people.

Most of the islands are part of the U.S. state of Hawaii. There is one tiny spot called Midway Atoll that is a little different, but almost everything else is part of the state. Because it is a state, kids in Hawaii go to school just like you do!

They learn about their history, the ocean, and the volcanoes that made their home. It is a place where science and nature are part of everyday life for everyone who lives there.
