Tell es-Sakan: A Super Old City Mound!

A 'tell' is like a giant, lumpy hill that's actually made of old buildings and trash piled up over hundreds and hundreds of years! Tell es-Sakan means 'Hill of Ash' because it's full of the remains of people who lived there long, long ago. It's like a giant cake made of history, with many layers of old homes and forts stacked on top of each other. This special hill is near Gaza City in Palestine.

A super long time ago, around 5,000 years ago, people from Egypt built a special town here! It was like a big fort and a place for trading. They wanted to be close to a river that was there back then, which was like a highway for boats. Later, different people called Canaanites built their own city on top of the old Egyptian one. It was like building a new house on top of an old foundation!

Tell es-Sakan was a really important spot because it was a trading post. That means people came from far away to buy and sell things. It was also one of the first Egyptian forts found outside of Egypt! Imagine finding a toy from your friend's house in a completely different country. That's how special this place was for the Egyptians. It helped them connect with other places.

After the Canaanites lived there, the city was left empty for a long time. Then, another city was built nearby, maybe to take its place. Sadly, parts of Tell es-Sakan have been damaged by building projects and even conflict. But archaeologists are still trying to learn all its secrets! It's like finding a treasure chest, but some of the treasure is a little hard to get to.
