Key Facts
What Was the Second Intifada?
The Second Intifada was a period of big trouble and fighting that happened between Palestinians and Israelis. It started in the year 2000 and lasted for about five years. Think of it like a really serious argument that got out of hand, causing a lot of sadness and worry for everyone involved. It was called the 'Second Uprising' because there was an earlier one too.
How Did It All Start?
Things got really heated after a visit by a leader named Ariel Sharon to a very important place in Jerusalem called the Temple Mount. This visit made many Palestinians upset, and protests began. Sadly, the police responded with force, using rubber bullets and even real bullets. In just a few weeks, over 100 Palestinian protesters were hurt or killed. This made the situation much worse.
What Happened During the Fighting?
The fighting got very serious. Palestinians used things like rocks and rockets, and sadly, some even used bombs to hurt people. Israelis used tanks and airplanes. It was a very dangerous time. Many people lost their lives, both Palestinians and Israelis, and some people from other countries too. The fighting was like a really bad storm that lasted for a long time.
When Did It End?
After five long years of fighting and sadness, leaders from both sides met in 2005 at a place called Sharm el-Sheikh. They agreed to try and stop the fighting and work towards peace. It was like finally agreeing to stop arguing and try to be friends again. This meeting helped to calm things down, but the memories of this tough time remained.
