Key Facts
Where Are These Cool Mountains?
The Sudetes are a super long chain of mountains in Central Europe, like a bumpy backbone for countries like the Czech Republic and Poland. They start near a city called Dresden and go all the way to another city called Ostrava. Think of them as a giant, rocky playground shared by three countries!
They are the highest part of a bigger rocky area called the Bohemian Massif. These mountains are not super pointy like some, but more like rolling hills and plateaus, a bit like mountains you might see in northern Europe.
Meet the Tallest Peak!
The very highest point in the Sudetes is a mountain called Sněžka. It's so tall, it's like stacking 100 school buses on top of each other! Sněžka is also the highest mountain in the whole Czech Republic.
It sits right on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland, so you can stand on top and be in two countries at once! There are other tall mountains too, like Praděd, which is the highest in a region called Moravia.
Rivers That Start Here!
Guess what? Some really important rivers begin their journey in the Sudetes! The mighty Elbe River, which flows through big cities, starts here.
So does the Oder River. Imagine tiny streams trickling down the mountains, joining together to become huge rivers that help people and animals all along their path. These mountains are like a giant water tower for the whole region, giving life to the land below.
Nature's Protected Places
Because the Sudetes are so special, some parts are protected as national parks. In Poland, there are parks called Karkonosze and Stołowe (which means 'Table' because it has flat tops!). In the Czech Republic, there's a park called Krkonoše. These parks keep the forests, animals, and beautiful views safe for everyone to enjoy, now and in the future. It's like a giant nature reserve!
