Southern Europe

Imagine a place where the sun shines a lot and a giant, sparkly sea called the Mediterranean is like a big blue playground! Southern Europe is made of three big finger-like lands called peninsulas that stick out into this sea. These are the Iberian, Italian, and Balkan peninsulas.

They are like the toes of Europe! Lots of countries are here, like Spain, Italy, and Greece. It's a very special part of the continent.

Guess what? Big, tall mountains act like giant walls around Southern Europe! The Pyrenees mountains separate the Iberian Peninsula, the Alps guard Italy, and the Balkan Mountains protect the Balkan Peninsula. These mountains are so high, they stop cold winds and lots of rain from reaching the sunny south. This helps keep the weather warm and lovely for growing yummy olives and grapes!

Sometimes, a hot wind called the Sirocco blows all the way from the sandy Sahara Desert! It visits Italy, but the tall Alps stop it from going further north. Also, winds like the Mistral can push the warm sea water away from the French coast, making it surprisingly cool, even in summer! It's like the sea is playing a game of hide-and-seek with the warm sun.

Southern Europe is like a giant history book! For a very long time, people have lived here, building amazing cities and creating wonderful traditions. Because of the mountains and the sea, the people here developed their own special ways of living, talking, and celebrating. It’s a place where ancient ruins and modern life mix together, telling tales of the past.
