Sappho

Long, long ago, over 2,500 years ago, there was a lady named Sappho who lived on a beautiful island called Lesbos. She was a poet, which means she wrote beautiful words that were like songs. People back then thought she was one of the best poets ever, even calling her the 'Tenth Muse'!

Her poems were meant to be sung with music, making them extra special. Sadly, most of her poems are lost now, like hidden treasures, but the ones we have are still amazing to read.

Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos, which is in Greece. Think of it like a sunny place with lots of olive trees and blue seas. She came from a rich family, which meant she probably had a nice home and got to go to school.

She might have had brothers and even a daughter named Cleïs! Sometimes, people had to move away from their homes, and Sappho was sent to a place called Sicily for a while. She wrote her poems there too.

Sappho's poems were like magic spells made of words. She wrote about feelings, like love and friendship, and also about the gods and her family. Her words were clear and painted pictures in your mind, making you feel like you were right there with her.

She probably wrote around 10,000 lines of poetry, which is a LOT! Imagine writing enough poems to fill a whole library. Even though we only have pieces of her work, they are still super important.

Even though Sappho lived so long ago, we still talk about her today! Her poems were so good that people for thousands of years have loved them and learned from them. She is also remembered as a symbol of love between women. The words 'sapphic' and 'lesbian' even come from her name and her island! She shows us how powerful words can be and how they can connect people across time.
