Key Facts
Where is This Big Island?
Lesbos is a HUGE island in the northeastern part of the Aegean Sea, which is a big blue ocean. It's so big that it's the third largest island in all of Greece! It has a super long coastline, like a giant ribbon of beaches and rocky shores, about 400 kilometers long.
That's like driving from your house to grandma's house many, many times! It's close to a place called Asia Minor, separated by a very narrow strip of water.
A City Like a Crown Jewel!
The biggest and most important city on Lesbos is called Mytilene. It sits on the southeastern coast, like a sparkly jewel on the island's edge. Many people live here, about a third of everyone on the island! Mytilene is also the capital, which means it's the main city where important decisions are made. It's a busy place with lots of houses, shops, and fun things to see.
Island Adventures Through Time!
Long, long ago, even before your grandparents were born, people lived on Lesbos! Ancient stories say it was part of a kingdom ruled from a famous city called Troy. Over many years, different people ruled the island, like the Byzantines and the Genoese. Then, for a very long time, it was part of the Ottoman Empire. Finally, in 1912, Lesbos became part of Greece, the country it is today!
What's It Like to Live There?
About 83,755 people call Lesbos home. Most of them live in Mytilene, the capital, but others live in smaller, charming towns and villages scattered across the island. Imagine living in a place where you can see the sea almost everywhere you go! The island has beautiful nature, and people have lived there for thousands of years, making it a place with a very rich past.
