Who Are the Samaritans?

Imagine a group of people who have lived in the same special land for thousands of years! That's kind of like the Samaritans. They are an ethnoreligious group, which means they share a common background and a special religion.

They believe they are descendants of the ancient Israelites who lived in a place called Samaria a very, very long time ago. They have their own special book, which they believe is the oldest version of the Torah, a very important religious text.

A Story from Long Ago

The Samaritans have a fascinating story about how they became a separate group. They say that long ago, when the ancient Israelites were divided, some people stayed behind in their homeland. These people didn't go into captivity with others.

They kept their own traditions and beliefs, including worshipping on a special mountain called Mount Gerizim. This is different from what some other groups, like the Jews, believe about the holiest place.

Amazing Traditions!

The Samaritans have some really cool traditions! They have a special version of the Torah, which is like a super old recipe book for their religion. They also have a very important leader called the High Priest. They believe this special job has been passed down in families for about 3,600 years, all the way back to Aaron, who was Moses' brother! That's longer than most castles have been around!

Where Do They Live Today?

Today, there aren't too many Samaritans, but they are still around! Most of them live in two main places: one is in a city called Holon in Israel, and the other is in a village called Kiryat Luza in the West Bank. They speak different languages depending on where they live, but they also use special ancient languages for their religious ceremonies.

It's amazing how they keep their traditions alive!
