Meet the Mighty Waterfall!

Imagine a giant waterfall on the big Mississippi River! That's Saint Anthony Falls. It used to be the only big, natural waterfall on the whole river. It's located right where the city of Minneapolis is today. This amazing waterfall was so powerful that people built things around it to use its energy. It's like a giant water-powered machine that helped a city grow!

How the Falls Got Their Name

A long, long time ago, a brave explorer named Father Louis Hennepin saw the falls. He named them after his favorite saint, Saint Anthony of Padua. But the people who lived there first, the Dakota people, had a special name for it too: Owámniyomni, which means 'whirlpool'. So, the falls have two names, one from the past and one from long ago!

Water Power for a Growing City!

The rushing water of Saint Anthony Falls was super useful! People built dams, which are like walls to hold back water, right on top of the falls. These dams helped power machines that made flour from wheat. This was so important that Minneapolis became known as the 'Flour Milling Capital of the World'! That means it made more flour than almost anywhere else!

The Falls Today

Even though the falls look a bit different now, they are still there! The parts you can see today are made of concrete, like a big, strong playground structure. There are also special locks, like watery elevators, that help boats travel up and down the river. You can even walk around and learn all about the history of this incredible place!
