Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Sacramento!
Imagine a river so big it's the most important one in Northern California! That's the Sacramento River. It starts way up north in the mountains and flows all the way south for about 400 miles. That's like driving from your house to your grandma's house many, many times! It winds through a big, flat valley that's super good for growing yummy food, like a giant green carpet.
A River's Long, Long Story
People have loved the Sacramento River for a super long time, even before there were cars or schools! For about 12,000 years, Native American tribes lived by its waters, finding fish to eat and using it to travel. Later, explorers came and gave it its name. Then, gold was found nearby, and lots of people rushed to the area, building towns like Sacramento, which is now the capital city!
Fishy Friends and Farm Food
This river used to be full of amazing fish, especially a type of salmon called chinook salmon. It was like a busy underwater highway for them! Today, the river helps grow lots of food for California and even other places. Farmers use its water to water their crops, making sure we have fruits and vegetables to eat. It's a very busy river!
Water for Everyone!
The Sacramento River is like a giant water pipe for California. Big dams hold back some of its water, and then it's sent through canals to farms and cities, even far away. It helps give water to more than half the people in California! But all these changes mean the river doesn't look quite the same as it used to, and the fish have a harder time.
