Rutherford B. Hayes

Imagine a president who was also a brave soldier! Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th president of the United States. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1822. Before becoming president, he was a lawyer and fought in the Civil War, where he was hurt five times! He was known for being fair and wanting everyone to be treated equally, no matter what they looked like or how much money they had.

Rutherford B. Hayes didn't just become president overnight. He was a lawyer who believed slavery was wrong and helped people escape it.

When the Civil War started, he bravely joined the army to fight for the Union. He was a great leader and was even injured five times in battles! After the war, he became a politician, serving in Congress and as the governor of Ohio before finally becoming president in 1877.

It was a long road filled with bravery and service.

President Hayes believed in making the government work better for everyone. He wanted jobs to be given based on skill, not who you knew. He also tried to make sure people of all races were treated fairly.

One big event during his time was a huge railroad strike. He had to make a tough decision to send in the army to help stop the problems. He also helped solve a big argument between two countries far away!

President Hayes was so committed to fairness that he promised not to run for president a second time, and he kept his promise! He retired to his home and spent his time with his family. Even though some people think he was just an average president, he did important things like trying to fix how government jobs were given out.
