Key Facts
What's This Game All About?
Rugby union is a super fun team sport played with an oval-shaped ball. Two teams of 15 players try to score points by carrying the ball and putting it on the ground in the other team's special area, called the 'in-goal'. They can also kick the ball through tall posts.
It's a bit like American football, but the ball is passed backward, not forward! Players wear special jerseys and sometimes mouthguards to protect their teeth.
Where Did Rugby Come From?
This game started a long, long time ago in England, at a school called Rugby School. The story goes that one day, a boy named William Webb Ellis got tired of playing soccer and decided to pick up the ball and run with it! That was the beginning of rugby. It spread to other countries, and now people all over the world love playing and watching it. It's like a game that traveled the world!
Why Is Rugby So Cool?
Rugby is a game that teaches teamwork and sportsmanship. Players have to work together like a well-oiled machine to move the ball down the field. Even when they tackle each other, they often help their opponents up afterward. It's a sport that builds strong friendships. Plus, watching the big players run with the ball and score tries is super exciting!
How Do You Score Points?
There are a few ways to score in rugby. The most common is a 'try', which is when a player grounds the ball in the opponent's in-goal area. That's worth 5 points!
After a try, the scoring team gets a chance to kick the ball through the goalposts for an extra 2 points, called a 'conversion'. You can also score by kicking the ball through the posts during regular play, which is called a 'penalty goal' (3 points) or a 'drop goal' (3 points).
