Key Facts
Feathers Fit for a King!
The Resplendent Quetzal is one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Males have super long, flowing tail feathers that can be as long as a playground slide! Their bodies are covered in bright green, red, and blue feathers that shimmer like a rainbow.
They look like they're wearing a fancy costume all the time! Females are a bit more camouflaged with brown and green feathers, helping them hide when they're nesting.
Where Does This Jewel Live?
These stunning birds live high up in the misty cloud forests of Central America. Think of tall, ancient trees covered in moss and dripping with rain. They like places like Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. They spend most of their time flying between trees, looking for yummy snacks. Itβs a very special home for a very special bird!
What's for Dinner?
Quetzals are mostly fruit-eaters, especially fond of wild avocados! They also enjoy eating insects, small frogs, and lizards. They are very good at catching flying insects right out of the air. Imagine catching a bug mid-flight β thatβs a quetzal superpower! They swallow small prey whole, and their beaks are strong enough to handle it.
A Bird of Legend!
For a long time, people thought quetzals were magical. In ancient times, their long tail feathers were so special that only kings and important people were allowed to wear them. They were considered sacred birds! Sadly, these beautiful birds are becoming harder to find, so scientists are working hard to protect them and their forest homes.
