Key Facts
Meet the Reindeer Family!
Reindeer, also called caribou, are super cool animals that live in cold, snowy places like the Arctic. They have thick, warm fur that keeps them cozy even when it's freezing! Their scientific name is Rangifer tarandus.
They are herbivores, which means they love to munch on plants, especially moss and tasty lichens that grow under the snow. They are like nature's little gardeners, digging up their food!
Antler Adventures!
Did you know that both boy and girl reindeer have antlers? These are like big, bony branches that grow from their heads! They use them to fight with other reindeer and to clear away snow to find food. Reindeer antlers can be as wide as a small car is long! They even shed them and grow new ones every year. How neat is that?
Super Snowy Survivors!
Reindeer have special hooves that are like snowshoes! They are wide and have a sharp edge that helps them walk on slippery ice and deep snow without sinking. Their fur is also amazing because it has hollow hairs that trap air, making them extra warm and even helping them float in water! They can weigh as much as a big dog, about 150 to 300 pounds.
Where Do They Roam?
These amazing animals live in the chilly Arctic regions of the world, like in Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and even across Europe and Asia. They love forests and open tundra, which is a treeless, frozen plain. Reindeer are known to travel long distances, sometimes for thousands of miles, looking for the best food and places to have their babies. They are true adventurers of the North!
