Key Facts
Meet the Amazing Elephant Family!
Proboscidea is a special group of animals that includes elephants! They are the largest land animals on Earth. Think of how big a school bus is β elephants are even bigger! They have super-long noses called trunks, which they use like a hand to grab food, drink water, and even say hello. There are only two main kinds of elephants left today: the African elephant and the Asian elephant.
Where Did These Giants Come From?
A long, long time ago, there were many more kinds of Proboscidea! Some were even bigger than today's elephants, like the woolly mammoths that lived in cold places and had fuzzy fur. Others, like the gomphotheres, had four tusks! Over thousands of years, many of these amazing creatures disappeared, but the elephants we know today are their amazing relatives who survived.
What Do These Gentle Giants Eat?
Elephants are herbivores, which means they only eat plants! They munch on grass, leaves, fruits, and bark. Their big trunks help them pull down branches and pick up small berries. Because they are so big, they need to eat a LOT of food every single day β as much as a grown-up person eats in a whole week, all in one day!
Why Elephants Are So Special!
Elephants are super smart and have strong family bonds. They live in groups led by an older female, called a matriarch. They can remember where to find water and food even after many years. Sadly, elephants are in danger because people sometimes hunt them for their ivory tusks. Itβs important to protect these wonderful animals so they can live happily for a long time.
