Who Are These Water Wonders?

Imagine a big, round, fuzzy creature swimming slowly in warm waters. That's a Sirenian! They are also called sea cows because they love to eat plants, just like cows on land. There are two kinds: manatees, which have paddle-shaped tails, and dugongs, which have tails that look like a dolphin's. They are super peaceful animals that spend most of their day eating and floating.

Where Do They Hang Out?

Sirenians live in warm, shallow waters all around the world. You can find manatees in the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and along the coasts of Florida. Dugongs like warmer oceans, from East Africa all the way to Australia. They love places with lots of seagrass and plants to eat, like bays, rivers, and the ocean floor.

What's for Dinner?

These gentle giants are herbivores, which means they only eat plants! Their favorite food is seagrass, but they also munch on sea algae and other underwater plants. They have big, strong lips to help them scoop up mouthfuls of greenery. A grown Sirenian can eat a whole lot of plants every single day, sometimes as much as a whole lawn!

Amazing Sea Cow Facts!

Did you know Sirenians are related to elephants? Wow! They are also very large, weighing as much as a small car. They have no back teeth and their front teeth are special for scraping plants. They are slow swimmers, but they can hold their breath for a long time, up to 10 minutes! They are also very curious and friendly.
