Key Facts
Meet the Land Makers!
Have you ever seen land that looks like it was scooped out of the sea or a lake? That's a polder! It's a special piece of land that people built by making a big wall, called a dike, around an area of water.
Then, they pumped all the water out! It’s like building a giant sandbox in the middle of a swimming pool and then scooping out all the water. This new land is lower than the land around it, so it needs to be watched carefully.
Where Did Polders Come From?
People have been making polders for a very, very long time! The Dutch people in a country called the Netherlands are super good at it. They needed more space for farms and houses, so they took land from the sea.
Imagine a country where almost a fifth of the land was once underwater! They built these amazing dikes, which are like giant walls, to keep the water out. It’s like building a fence around your backyard to keep your dog in, but this fence keeps the ocean out!
Why Polders Are Awesome!
Polders are super important because they give us more space for farms to grow food and places for people to live. Without them, some places would be too small! But they also need a lot of care.
The land in a polder can sink over time, and the dikes need to be strong to stop floods. Sometimes, little animals like muskrats try to dig tunnels in the dikes, which can be a problem. It’s like having a special garden that needs extra watering and weeding.
How Do They Stay Dry?
Keeping a polder dry is a big job! Since the land is lower than the water outside, water can try to sneak in through the ground or from rain. So, people use pumps, like giant water vacuums, to suck the extra water out.
They also have special gates called sluices that they can open when the water outside is low, like at low tide, to let some water drain away. It’s a constant battle to keep the water at the right level so the land stays usable.
