Welcome to Plymouth!

Plymouth Colony was like the very first English neighborhood in a big part of America called New England. It started way back in 1620. Think of it like a new playground being built, but instead of swings, it had houses and farms!

The people who started it were called Pilgrims, and they sailed on a famous ship named the Mayflower. This colony grew to be a town called Plymouth, in what we now call Massachusetts.

The Mayflower Adventure!

The Pilgrims wanted to live in a place where they could practice their religion freely. So, they packed their bags and set sail on the Mayflower. It was a long and bumpy journey across the Atlantic Ocean, which is like sailing across a giant bathtub for months!

When they finally arrived, they found a place that had already been explored and named by someone else. They worked hard to build their homes and make friends with the Native Americans who already lived there.

Making New Friends and New Traditions!

The Pilgrims learned a lot from the Wampanoag people, who were the Native Americans living in the area. A very helpful person named Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn and where to fish. This helped them have enough food to survive.

Because they learned to work together, they had a big feast to celebrate, which is the start of our Thanksgiving holiday! It shows how important it is to be kind and share.

A Colony Grows and Changes

Plymouth Colony was important because it was one of the first English places to stick around in New England. Over time, it grew bigger and became part of a larger area. Even though the colony itself eventually joined with other places, the stories of the Pilgrims and their adventures are still told today. They remind us about courage, starting over, and learning to live with others.
