The Olmecs were one of the very first big groups of people to live in ancient Mexico, a long, long time ago. They were like the grand-grand-grandparents of many other cultures in that area! They lived in warm, wet places with lots of trees and rivers.
They built amazing things and were super creative. Think of them as the original artists and builders of their time, leaving behind incredible mysteries for us to discover!
Giants Made of Stone!
The most famous thing the Olmecs made are HUGE stone heads! These heads are so big, some are as tall as a two-story house or even taller than a giraffe! They carved these giant faces out of rock, which must have been incredibly hard work.
No one knows for sure if they are pictures of real leaders or something else. These stone giants are like ancient selfies, but way, way bigger and more mysterious!
What Did They Do?
The Olmecs were busy people! They farmed corn, beans, and squash to eat. They also traded with other groups, sharing their cool crafts and ideas. They built big towns with impressive buildings and plazas, which were like town squares. They even invented a way to write and had their own calendar, just like we do today! They were smart thinkers and builders who left a big mark on history.
Why We Still Talk About Them!
Even though the Olmecs lived thousands of years ago and their cities are gone, we still learn about them. They were like the first big stars in ancient Mexico, and many later cultures looked up to them. They invented things and created art that inspired others.
