Basalt

Imagine a rock that’s born from hot, melty lava! That’s basalt! When lava flows out of a volcano, it’s super hot and runny.

If it cools down really, really fast, it turns into basalt. Because it cools so quickly, the tiny pieces that make it up don't have much time to grow big. So, basalt looks smooth and fine-grained, like a tiny pebble beach.

It’s the most common type of volcanic rock on our whole planet Earth!

Basalt starts its life deep inside the Earth, way down where it’s super hot and melty. This hot, gooey stuff is called magma. When volcanoes erupt, this magma comes to the surface as lava.

Basalt lava is special because it’s not thick and sticky; it’s quite runny, like pancake batter. This means it can flow really far and spread out before it cools and hardens into basalt rock. It’s like pouring a thin layer of paint!

Guess what? Basalt isn't just on Earth! Scientists have found basalt on other planets and moons too. The dark, flat areas on the Moon, called the 'maria' (which means seas), are actually made of old basalt lava flows. Even on Venus and Mars, there are huge plains covered in basalt. It’s like basalt is a rock that travels all around our solar system, showing up on different worlds!

Basalt is important because it tells us about what’s happening deep inside our planet. The way basalt forms and what it’s made of gives scientists clues about the hot, gooey stuff far beneath our feet. Plus, basalt is used for lots of things! It can be crushed up to make roads and buildings, or even melted down to make strong fibers. So, this fast-cooling lava rock is a big helper for us!
