Key Facts
Where is North Holland?
North Holland is a special part of the Netherlands, a country in Europe. It's like a big finger pointing out into the North Sea! To its south are other parts of the Netherlands called South Holland and Utrecht.
To its east are Friesland and Flevoland. It's a place where you'll find lots of water, like big lakes and canals, and also land where people live and play. The weather can be a bit windy, perfect for those famous windmills!
A Long, Long Time Ago!
A very, very long time ago, this area was called the County of Holland. Then, it became part of a bigger place called the 'Northern Quarter'. Imagine a giant map of the Netherlands, and this was the top part!
Later on, in 1840, the big province of Holland was split into two. So, North Holland got its name! Even the land itself has changed, with a big lake called Haarlemmermeer being drained to make more space for people and farms.
Meet the Big Cities!
The most important city in North Holland is Haarlem, where the leaders of the province meet. But the BIGGEST and most famous city is Amsterdam! It's the capital of the whole Netherlands and a super busy place with canals, museums, and lots of people.
Amsterdam is so big that it's the busiest airport in the Netherlands and one of the busiest in all of Europe. That means lots of planes fly in and out every day!
What Do People Do There?
People in North Holland do all sorts of things! They work in the big cities like Amsterdam, maybe in shops, offices, or even at the airport. They also farm the land and work with the water.
Because it's near the sea, fishing is important too. They speak Dutch, which is the language of the Netherlands. It's a place full of busy people living and working together, making North Holland a vibrant and exciting region.
