Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, or VU for short, is a big school in the city of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It's a place where people go to learn all sorts of amazing things, like science, art, and how the world works. The most special thing about it is its name: 'Vrije' means 'Free' in Dutch!

This means it started out not being told what to do by the government or a church, which was pretty unusual a long time ago.

This university started way back in 1880. That's older than your grandparents, and maybe even your great-grandparents! It was started by a person named Abraham Kuyper, who wanted a place for learning that was independent. Over the years, it grew and grew, and even though it started as a private school, it now gets money from the government, just like other big public schools.

The VU is special because it's one of two huge learning places in Amsterdam. It's also located in a cool part of the city, right next to a busy business area. Imagine a school that's like a mini-city itself, with lots of students and teachers all working and learning together. It has a special seal with a picture of a lady in a garden, and a mythical creature called a griffin as its symbol!

As of a few years ago, almost 30,000 students were studying at the VU! That's more people than can fit in a big football stadium. There are also thousands of teachers and helpers working there. It costs a lot of money to run such a big school, and the VU gets money from the government, from students paying to learn, and from people who want to help it grow.
