Flevoland: The Land That Wasn't There!

Flevoland is like a secret island in the middle of the Netherlands! It's not a real island that grew from the sea, but a place that people built by taking land away from the water. It's surrounded by big lakes, like a giant bathtub!

This province is the newest one in the Netherlands, meaning it's like the baby of the family, only being officially made in 1986. It's a flat place, perfect for bikes and farms.

Long, long ago, the area where Flevoland is now was a giant salty sea called the Zuiderzee. Then, clever people built a huge wall called the Afsluitdijk to stop the sea from coming in. They also built more walls and pumped all the water out, like draining a giant swimming pool!

This created new land, called 'polders', where people could live and grow food. It took many years, like building a giant LEGO castle, but it was worth it!

Flevoland is a very special place because almost all of its land is brand new, made by humans! It's mostly flat, which makes it super easy to ride bikes everywhere. Lots of people in Flevoland work on farms, growing yummy food like potatoes and vegetables.

The capital city is called Lelystad, and another big city is Almere. Even though it's the smallest province by land, it's home to lots of people who love their unique home.
