Welcome to Friesland!

Friesland is a super cool province, which is like a big part of a country, in the northern Netherlands. It's a place with lots and lots of green grass and many sparkling lakes. Think of it like a giant playground with water slides everywhere!

It's home to the Frisian people, who have their own special language called West Frisian, which sounds a bit different from Dutch. Most people there can speak both languages, like being good at two games!

A Long, Long Time Ago...

The land of Friesland used to be part of a much bigger area called ancient Frisia. That's where the name 'Friesland' comes from! Over many, many years, this big area changed, and Friesland became its own special place.

It's like how your favorite toy might have started as a simple idea and then became something amazing. The Frisian people have a long history here, living on this land for a very long time.

What Makes Friesland Special?

Friesland is famous for its beautiful lakes and green fields, perfect for cows to munch grass! It's also special because of its unique language, West Frisian. It's one of the only places in the Netherlands where a different language is spoken officially. This makes Friesland a place with its own special culture and traditions, like having a secret handshake that only people from Friesland know!

Meet the Capital City!

The main city in Friesland is called Leeuwarden. It's a busy place with over 123,000 people living there! That's more people than can fit in a really, really big stadium.

Leeuwarden is where the leaders of Friesland meet to make important decisions. Other towns like Sneek and Heerenveen are also important places where people live and work. Friesland is divided into 18 smaller areas called municipalities.
