North American Beaver

Imagine a furry animal that's like a tiny construction worker! That's the North American beaver. They are the biggest rodents in North America, which means they are super-sized mice!

Beavers have thick, brown fur that keeps them warm in the water, and they have big, flat tails that look like a paddle. These tails help them swim and also warn their friends when danger is near by slapping the water. They are truly amazing engineers of the wild!

Beavers are famous for building dams across rivers and streams. They use sticks, mud, and rocks to create these amazing structures. Dams help them make a pond, which is a safe place for their homes, called lodges.

Lodges are cozy houses made of sticks and mud, with an entrance underwater so predators can't get in. It’s like having a secret underwater door to your house! This makes their homes super safe and dry.

Beavers are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. Their favorite foods are tree bark, leaves, twigs, and the soft inner part of tree branches called cambium. They use their strong teeth, which are like built-in chisels, to gnaw down trees.

They can even chew through trees as thick as a grown-up's arm! They also love to eat aquatic plants that grow in the water. So, they are always busy munching on nature's snacks.

Beavers do more than just build dams; they actually help the environment! Their dams create wetlands, which are like super-important habitats for many other animals, like ducks, frogs, and fish. These wetlands also help clean the water and prevent floods.

So, even though they are busy building for themselves, beavers are also important helpers for the whole ecosystem. They are like little environmental superheroes!
