Who Were the Norse?

Long, long ago, before your grandparents were even born, brave explorers called the Norse lived in cold, northern lands like Norway and Iceland. They were amazing sailors and adventurers! They built long, pointy boats called longships that could travel across rough seas.

These ships were like the supercars of their time, built for speed and strength. The Norse loved to explore and find new places to live and trade.

Sailing to Lands Unknown!

Around 1000 years ago, some Norse explorers, led by a man named Leif Erikson, sailed west from Greenland. They were looking for new lands. They found a place with forests and grapes, which they called Vinland.

This is the land we now call North America! It was a huge adventure, like sailing off the edge of a map and finding a whole new continent. They were the very first Europeans to set foot in North America, way before Columbus!

What Was It Like?

The Norse built small settlements, like little villages, in Vinland. They lived there for a while, farming and exploring. They met the native people who already lived there, and sometimes they traded, but other times they had disagreements.

The Norse didn't stay for too long because it was far from home and sometimes dangerous. But their journey showed that people could travel across the big ocean to reach new continents.

Why We Remember Them

The Norse explorers were super brave! They proved that people could sail across vast oceans and discover new lands. Their stories are like ancient adventure tales that teach us about exploration and how different cultures can meet.

Finding their old settlements, like the one at L'Anse aux Meadows, helps us understand what life was like for them and how they interacted with the land and its first people.
