Key Facts
Meet Leif the Lucky!
Imagine a super-brave explorer named Leif Erikson! He lived a very, very long time ago, around the year 970. People called him 'Leif the Lucky' because he was a great sailor and explorer. He was like a superhero of the sea, always looking for new places to discover. He was born a long, long time ago, and we think it was in Iceland, a cool island far away.
Sailing to New Worlds!
Leif's dad, Erik the Red, was also an explorer and started a home in Greenland. Leif grew up there and became a great sailor, just like his dad. One day, Leif heard stories about lands far to the west. He decided to sail his ship and see for himself! He sailed across the big, blue ocean and found a place he called Vinland. This was way, way before other famous explorers like Christopher Columbus!
A New Home Far Away
Leif and his friends built a special camp in Vinland. It was like a tiny village for them to live in for a while. Scientists think this place might be in a country called Canada today, in a place called Newfoundland. They even found old buildings there that look like they were made by Leif's people! It's like finding a treasure chest from the past!
Leif's Big Discovery
Leif Erikson was the first person from Europe that we know of to walk on the land of North America. He was an amazing explorer who showed everyone that there were lands across the ocean. He was a chief of his people in Greenland and had sons who also became leaders. Leif's adventures are super important because they show us how brave people can be when they explore!
