The Mamluks were originally slave soldiers who became rulers!

Who Were the Mamluks?

The Mamluks were special soldiers who became rulers in Egypt and Syria a long, long time ago, around 800 years back! They weren't born there; they were brought from faraway lands as kids to be trained as warriors. They were super strong and skilled fighters.

They built a powerful kingdom called the Mamluk Sultanate, with its main city in Cairo. Cairo became a bustling place with grand buildings and busy markets because of them.

Building a Mighty City!

The Mamluks were amazing builders! They didn't just fight; they created beautiful cities. In Cairo, they built tall mosques with fancy domes and minarets that reached for the sky, some even taller than a giraffe!

They also built hospitals and schools. These buildings weren't just pretty; they were important places for people to learn, get better when they were sick, and pray. They used strong stone and decorated everything with amazing patterns.

Fighting Off Big Empires!

The Mamluks were like superheroes protecting their land. They famously fought off the mighty Mongol armies, who had conquered almost everywhere else! They also kicked out the Crusaders, who were trying to take over.

Their clever fighting strategies and brave soldiers made them a force to be reckoned with. They were so good at defending their kingdom that they kept it safe for hundreds of years, which is a really long time!

What They Left Behind

Even though the Mamluk Sultanate isn't around anymore, we can still see their amazing work today. The beautiful buildings they constructed in Cairo are still there, like the stunning mosques and madrasas (schools). These places show us how skilled they were. They also left behind stories of their bravery and how they protected their land, which is pretty cool to learn about.
