Where Do the Trains Go?

Imagine a giant snake made of train tracks stretching all the way from a big city called Manhattan to the very end of Long Island! That's where the Long Island Rail Road, or LIRR, goes. It has 126 stations, which is more than the number of classrooms in a really big school!

The tracks are so long, they could go around a playground almost 100 times. These trains help people get to work, visit friends, and explore all the cool places on Long Island.

Super Old, Super Cool Trains!

Guess what? The LIRR is the oldest train company in the United States that's still using its original name! It started way back in 1834, even before your grandparents' grandparents were born.

That's almost 200 years of chugging along! The first part of the track opened in 1836, and it's been running every single day since then. It’s like a superhero that never takes a day off, helping people travel day and night, all year round.

The Busiest Train Tracks Ever!

These trains are super popular! On a normal school day, more than 350,000 people ride the LIRR. That's like filling up a giant stadium with people, and then filling it up again, and then some!

It's the busiest train system for people who ride to work in all of North America. That means lots and lots of people rely on these trains to get them where they need to go, making it a very important part of the area.

Who Owns the Trains?

The LIRR is owned by a big group called the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or MTA. Think of the MTA like the boss of many different ways people travel in New York, including buses and subways. They make sure the trains are safe, clean, and running on time. The LIRR is one of two train systems the MTA takes care of, helping millions of people get around every single day.
