Who Ruled the Land of New Spain?

New Spain was a huge place, like a giant playground that stretched across North America, from what is now the United States all the way down to Central America. It had sunny beaches, tall mountains, and even deserts! The main city, Mexico City, was built on top of an old, amazing city called Tenochtitlan. It was a very important place for the rulers.

For almost 300 years, from 1535 to 1821, special people called viceroys were sent from Spain to be the king's bosses in New Spain. They were like the principal of a super-big school, making sure everything ran smoothly. Sometimes, if there wasn't a viceroy, another important person would step in to do the job.

These viceroys had a lot of jobs! They made sure laws were followed, collected money for the king, and even helped build churches and cities. They were like the ultimate problem-solvers for a whole continent. The first viceroy was named Antonio de Mendoza, and he started it all in 1535!

The main language spoken by the rulers and many people was Spanish. But, of course, many different groups of people lived there, so lots of other languages were spoken too. They traded goods like silver and sugar, which were super valuable, helping New Spain become a very important place for Spain.
