Who Was Governor Macquarie?

Imagine being in charge of a whole new land! Lachlan Macquarie was like a super-important boss for a place called New South Wales in Australia, a long, long time ago. He was a soldier from Scotland and became the governor, which means he made big decisions.

He helped change Australia from a place where people were sent as punishment to a place where new towns could grow and people could build their lives. He was a very busy governor!

Building a Brand New City!

Governor Macquarie loved building things! He helped plan out the streets of Sydney, the biggest city in New South Wales. He made sure there was a big, beautiful park called Hyde Park for everyone to enjoy, just like a giant playground!

He also ordered many important buildings to be built, like hospitals and government offices. He even helped plan out other towns, making sure they had good streets and places to live. He was like a city architect!

Exploring the Unknown!

Australia has huge mountains called the Blue Mountains. They were very hard to cross! Governor Macquarie was brave and said, 'Let's go see what's on the other side!' He gave the go-ahead for an adventure, and explorers found a way across.

This was super important because it meant people could find new places to live and build farms. He also helped start the very first town built inland, far from the sea, called Bathurst. He loved new discoveries!

Fairness for Everyone?

Governor Macquarie wanted to be fair. He believed that people who had been sent to Australia as convicts, and had finished their punishment, should be treated well. He gave them good jobs and land to farm.

He also wanted Aboriginal people, who lived in Australia first, to be treated kindly and even started the first school for Aboriginal children. However, sometimes his orders led to sad events, showing that being a leader is very tricky.
