Meet the Man Who Started North Korea!

Kim Il Sung was a very important person who helped create the country of North Korea a long, long time ago, in 1948. He was like the first captain of a ship, leading it from the very beginning. He stayed the leader for a super long time, until he passed away in 1994.

That's longer than many of your grandparents have been alive! He was so important that after he was gone, he was called the 'Eternal President,' which means he's remembered forever.

A Leader Through Big Changes

Kim Il Sung became the leader after a big world event called World War II ended. Korea had been ruled by Japan, but after the war, Kim Il Sung helped make North Korea its own country. He was in charge for over 45 years, which is a really, really long time.

During his time, North Korea had a special way of doing things, and it was very close with big countries like the Soviet Union and China. He saw many presidents in the United States and South Korea come and go!

What Made Him Special?

Kim Il Sung had a special idea called Juche, which meant Koreans should be strong and do things for themselves. He was also known as the 'Great Leader.' People in North Korea were taught to admire him a lot. He even picked his son, Kim Jong Il, to be the next leader, starting a family tradition of leading the country. This is like a royal family, but for a whole country!

Leading a Different Kind of Country

Under Kim Il Sung, North Korea became a place where the government made almost all the decisions about jobs and money. For a while, life in North Korea was even a little better than in South Korea. But later, South Korea became very strong and rich, while North Korea's money situation got tough.

Sometimes, North Korea even took things from other countries, like a ship called the USS Pueblo, because they were worried about other countries being too close.
