Key Facts
Meet the Giant!
K2 is a super-duper tall mountain, the second tallest on our whole planet! It's so high, it reaches 8,611 meters (that's 28,251 feet!) above the sea. Only Mount Everest is taller. K2 is part of a giant mountain range called the Karakoram, and it sits right on the border between Pakistan and China. It's a place of ice, snow, and amazing views.
Why is it Called the 'Savage Mountain'?
This mountain got a nickname: the 'Savage Mountain'! That's because it's a very tricky and dangerous place to climb. One climber said it's a mountain that 'tries to kill you.' It's much harder to climb than even Mount Everest, even though it's a little shorter. This is because it's located further north, where the weather can be really wild and stormy.
Who Conquered K2 First?
Climbing K2 is a huge adventure! The very first people to reach the top were two Italian climbers, Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. They did it in 1954. It took them a long time and a lot of bravery. Now, many people try to climb it every year, mostly in the warm months of July and August when the weather is a bit nicer.
A Mountain of Records!
K2 is known as 'The King of Mountains' and 'The Mountaineers' Mountain' because it's so tough. It was the last of the world's highest mountains to be climbed in the winter! That amazing feat happened in January 2021. Even though it's dangerous, people are still amazed by K2's beauty and the challenge it offers.
