Key Facts
Meet the Big Change Maker!
Imagine a time when everyone in Scotland had to follow the same church rules. John Knox was a very important person who wanted to change those rules! He was born a long, long time ago, around the year 1514, in a town called Haddington. He became a priest and then decided he wanted to make the church more about the people and their beliefs. He was like a superhero for church reform!
Adventures and New Ideas!
John Knox had some exciting, and sometimes scary, adventures! He had to leave Scotland for a while and even went to England. There, he helped King Edward VI with church ideas.
Later, he traveled to Geneva, a city in Switzerland, where he met another famous reformer named John Calvin. John learned a lot and even wrote his own special church service book. It was like writing the rules for a new game!
Back Home to Lead the Way!
When John Knox finally returned to Scotland, he was ready to lead a huge change called the Reformation. He worked with other brave people to make the church more like what they believed was right. This was a really big deal and changed Scotland forever! He even wrote a book about all these changes, called 'The History of the Reformation in Scotland'.
Talking to the Queen!
John Knox wasn't afraid to speak his mind, even to the Queen of Scotland, Mary. He had many talks with her because he didn't agree with some of the things she did that went against the new church rules. He was a very strong leader who wanted everyone to follow his ideas about how the church should be run. He kept preaching and sharing his message until he passed away in 1572.
